Formed in Eugene, Oregon but consisting of two Hawaiians (Charlie Oyama and
Pete Apo) and mainlander Dick Shirley, the Travelers 3 were the second folk
group (after the Limeliters) to be signed to Elektra, and this is their debut album,
the first of three the group recorded for the label. In the notes, Jac Holzman freely
admits that Elektra was trying to cash in on the success of similar acts like the
Kingston Trio, but says that the Travelers 3 had “a little bit more body than the
Kingston Trio.” We’ll let our folk-minded customers be the judge of that, but we
can tell you this is one tuneful album, with great, tightly arranged harmonies and
some nice oddball (e.g. the pennywhistle on Land of
Oden) touches. It’s a CD debut, too...a Collectors’
Choice Music exclusive! Includes Roll Along; Hush-ABye;
Tamure; Bowling Green; Well Well Well; Sinner
Man; Julianne; Marcella Wahine; Land of Oden; Hi
Jolly; Gotta Travel On, and Good Morning Captain.
