Freddie Hughes had one of the great falsetto soul voices of the era - pleading, celebratory, and always dripping with soul. The Oakland-based artist was popular in his home region of the Bay Area but did not achieve national recognition until the sweet soul ballad 'Send My Baby Back' was an R&B smash in 1968. On the hindlegs of the hit, Wand Records commissioned an album, which has subsequently become one of the most sought-after soul long players of the era. Stuffed with classy performances such as the uptown ballad 'He's No Good' and northern fave 'We Gotta Keep On', the album demonstrates the versatility of Hughes remarkable talent. The album itself is a stone classic gem, but Kent have added a brace of additional tracks that further illustrate Hughes range, and give some glimpse of his R&B roots in the San Francisco music scene. These range from the non-LP single 'My Baby Came Back' to the work of Hughes' incredible earlier duos: the Soul Brothers with Ken Pleasants, where we debut many unissued gems; and the Casanova II with Wiley Trass that give Sam & Dave a run for their money on their two rare singles for Early Bird. With an informative booklet, this long overdue official reissue will be a treat for vintage soul fans of all shapes and sizes."
