When pianist Bill Evans arrived on the jazz scene in the late fifties his unusually quiet and introspective style of playing and mild-mannered demeanor made him an anomaly in his field. In 1958 he became a member of Miles Davis' sextet, playing on the sessions that led to the epoch-making Kind of Blue. Miles later wrote "Bill had this quiet fire that I loved on the piano. The way he approached it, the sound he got was like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down from some clear waterfall". Evans eventually dropped out of the sextet because of the hectic tour schedule and began leading his own trio with Scott LaFaro and Eddie Gomez. This album is from that later period which continued through the late sixties and seventies up until his death in 1980.
