In 1958, when this session was recorded, both Stan Getz and Cal Tjader had established themselves as masters of bebop and ballads. Getz's adventures in Latin rhythms were but a few months ahead; Tjader's were long established. This San Francisco session is a wonder, featuring the monumental bassist Scott LaFaro, the superb drummer Billy Higgins, already-renowned pianist Vince Guaraldi, and the (still) unsung guitarist Eddie Duran. "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is Getz and Tjader at their ballad best; "Liz-Anne" gives him uptempo space. The Guaraldi-Duran-LaFaro team is best represented on "Crow's Nest," and Higgins is wonderful on "Ginza." More than 40 years old, this is a jazz classic- a most important reissue.
