Quicksand (single a-side not on album) - Bonus audio - Leo's Story Part 1 - Leo presents his own story talking about his beginnings, in conversation with David Courtney and play extracts from some of the early demos.
Leo was discovered by Adam Faith in 1972 performing in the rock band Patches who released one single. David Courtney was the bands agent / manager, also the drummer in Faith’s last band, and linked up with Faith in 1972 to help co-write and produce Leo's first solo recordings. These were made at Roger Daltrey’s studio and instead the songs made up Daltrey’s debut solo album Daltrey. From it came the hit single Giving It All Away, written by Sayer and Courtney.
Faith signed Leo to Chrysalis and from the next sessions came the album Silver bird, named after Leo's fascination with flying machines. Leo’s sound and writing with Courtney has a similar feel to the early albums of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Released in 1973 the album spawned the single The Show Must Go On for which Leo memorably donned his Pier rot costume and made an extraordinary appearance on Top Of The Pops with the white face and gloves. It was a costume he wore on tour with Roy Music. The single reached no.2 and the album also no. 2 in the Auk charts in 1974. The Show Must Go On was covered by the US band Three Dog Night who scored a top 5 US hit later in the same year.
