Originally released by Capitol Records in 1967, Letta Mbulu Sings introduced the extraordinary voice of the South African singer to an international audience. Recorded after Mbulu relocated to the United States, the album brings together South African musical traditions, jazz, soul and sophisticated orchestral pop in a distinctive collection produced by David Axelrod.

Mbulu sings primarily in South African languages, using her voice with remarkable rhythmic freedom and emotional range. Her delivery moves naturally from intimate, reflective passages to bright and celebratory performances, while the arrangements combine percussion, acoustic instrumentation, brass and sweeping orchestral colours.

“Aredze” opens the album with a spacious arrangement that allows Mbulu’s expressive phrasing to take centre stage. “Pula Yetla” follows with a warmer rhythmic pulse, while “Zola (Mra),” “Bhanoyi” and “Thokoza” demonstrate the close connection between African melodic traditions and the contemporary soul and jazz sounds emerging from Los Angeles during the late 1960s.

The deeply affecting “My Son” closes the first side with one of the album’s most restrained performances. Side two ranges from the lively movement of “Wacha” and “Magwalandini” to the traditional character of “Qhinebe.” “Sexwaxwa” provides another concise rhythmic highlight before “Where Does It Lead” concludes the record in English with a reflective soul ballad.

Produced with characteristic imagination by David Axelrod, Letta Mbulu Sings remains an important early statement from one of South Africa’s most distinctive vocalists. This Endless Happiness edition restores the complete eleven-track debut album to vinyl.
