Somewhere Before is a live album by pianist Keith Jarrett recorded on August 30 & 31, 1968 at Shelly's Manne-Hole in Hollywood, California. It features Charlie Haden on double bass and Paul Motian on drums.
The trio covers Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" in an attractive, semi-funky style. "Pretty Ballad" is exactly what the title implies; Jazz hardly gets more subtle and beautiful than this. "Moving Soon" is a chaotic Free Jazz jam. In "New Rag" we begin to hear the distinctive Jarrett style. As an example of early, unfocused Jarrett, this is simply fascinating material.
