Throughout the 1990s percussionist and DJ Mark 'Snowboy' Cotgrove was a constant presence on the club scene. As a DJ he was one of the inventors of deep funk, as a percussionist his he was one of the biggest-selling jazz artists of the time with his Latin Section records, whilst as a producer he made a series of soul and funk records that saw him lauded on the soul, funk and Acid Jazz scenes. This compilation for the first time includes all of his soul singles, as well as the best tracks from his 1996 album MFOS.
Featuring 'Girl Overboard', 'Lucky Fellow' 'Give Me The Sunshine' and 'Where Love Lives' the wonderful re-imagining of 70s soul that utilised the combined talents of the JTQ and the wonderful voices of Noel McKoy - described by Snowboy as the UK's greatest soul vocalist - and Anna Ross. These singles all saw extensive club plays whilst 'Lucky Fellow' was revived just two years ago as a 7 inch selling several thousand more copies.
Of the instrumental sides we have the classic 'Astralisation', the finest recreation of the Mizell Brothers' cosmic groove sound ever realised by a British producer. Then there is the frenetic reworking of 'The New Avengers' which Keb Darge made into a true Deep Funk classic, and the oft overlooked 'Funky Djembe' which should have been.
The package includes an in-depth interview with Snowboy, explaining the full story behind these recordings, as well as a whole bunch of great images.
