Tangerine Peel’s only album catches the group at a point where the colourful psychedelic pop of the late 1960s was giving way to a brighter, more direct kind of melodic rock. The songs are concise and carefully shaped, with strong choruses, polished vocal arrangements and enough guitar and keyboard colour to keep the music from becoming ordinary pop. It is a record built less on heavy experimentation than on craft, charm and a very English sense of melodic confidence.

What makes Soft Delights appealing is its balance of lightness and musicianship. Tracks such as Cindy Lou, Soft Delights and Goodnight To The Nights show the band moving easily between pop-rock, psych leftovers and early-70s studio polish, while the longer pieces give the arrangements room to breathe. This Hifly Sound Anstalt edition restores a pleasantly unusual album from a band whose history also connects to songwriter and producer Mike Chapman.
