This was Steeleye Span's fifteenth album which was originally released on the Dover record label in 1989. Dover Records was a division of the Chrysalis record label run by the Cokell brothers The album features the Mark VIII lineup, consisting of Maddy Prior (lead vocals & backing vocals), Peter Knight (violin, mandolin & backing vocals), Bob Johnson (guitars, lead vocals and backing vocals), Nigel Pegrum (drums & percussion), Tim Harries (bass, piano & backing vocals), and Martin Ditchum (extra percussion). 'Tempted And Tried' was produced by John Etchells, Bob Johnson and Peter Knight, and engineered by John Etchells Maddy Prior's voice is one of the most distinctive and wonderful in British folk, up there with Sandy Denny, Norma Waterson and prior's occasional collaborator June Tabor. Prior's vocals dominate these 11 songs, and the distinctive fiddle of Peter Knight is equally impressive.
