huddie leadbetter died in 1949. he did not know at that time that he would have become one of the biggest icons in folk music, thanks to his life which represents a modern epic of the poor: framed, victim of racial prejudice, only guilty to be proud and free. a sad story begun in 1934, interrupted for a while but then raised to immortality. this collection begins with 1886 classic african american sharecropper song goodnight irene, and winds through 10 of leadbelly's best song desperate, but filled with immeasurable love for life.
