The fact that he could not only play just about every style of Texas music, but play it with so much soul and intensity, was something that always amazed me." -- Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler As the primary force behind the Sir Douglas Quintet in the late '60s and early '70s, San Antonio native Doug Sahm poured jazz, blues, R&B, conjunto, and psychedelic flavors into a unique regional style now known as Tex-Mex. Always proud of his connection to the Alamo city, he was also a man of many worlds. As Sahm himself said it, "I'm part of Willie Nelson's world, and I love it, but at the same time I'm part of the Grateful Dead's world." For his 1973 Atlantic debut, Doug Sahm And Band, the singer assembled a world-class studio group that essentially recorded the album live. Players included Dr. John, David "Fathead" Newman, David Bromberg, Flaco Jimenez, and Bob Dylan, whose "Wallflower" appeared exclusively on Sahm's record for almost two decades (both Dylan and Sahm sing on the track, as well as on "Blues Stay Away From Me"). Enjoying newfound critical attention, Sahm completed Texas Tornado (under the name The Sir Douglas Band) from sessions recorded for the first album, along with additional San Francisco dates. This Rhino Handmade release includes both albums in their entirety, as well as many alternate takes and previously unreleased tracks, including "From A Jack To A King" and "Leave Me Alone With The Blues" -- both recorded in late 1972 with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel and Dave Grisman on mandolin. The Genuine Texas Groover is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 5,000 copies.
