When Latin Jazz King Puente died in 2000, he left a hole in the genre thathe had helped define over almost sixty years. An eclectic musician and agifted arranger, this Spanish Harlem idol experienced all the possiblenuances of Latin music, from salsa to boogaloo, to mambo to rhumba, toacid jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms. During his long career he was a steadyreference point for musicians of the calibre of Willie Bobo, JohnnyPacheco, Mongo Santamaria and conga wizard Ray Barretto - all of themjoining his orchestra at various times.
