Can anyone not know who this man is? Boogie/blues pianist Dr. John achieved notoriety in the early '70's with his voodoo inspired debut album "Gris Gris" and renamed himself Dr. John the Nightripper to drive home the message. Music biz myth alleges that "Gris Gris" was recorded on overbooked Sonny & Cher studio time. Dr. John went on to record more voodoo inspired albums ("The Sun, Moon & Herbs" with Jagger and Clapton guesting and "Gumbo" produced by Jerry Wexler). In 1973 he had his first hit single, "In The Right Place", produced by Allen Toussaint with The Meters as the backing band.Before all this, Dr. John was Mac Rebennack - session musician and producer. Dr. John returned to his roots for the "…Plays Mac Rebennack" album which was originally released in 1981. Always known as a distinguished pianist, it was only a matter of "right time, right place" when he recorded this album. It's just him on piano and those throaty vocals. Simple but potent. This release is an extended re-master of the 1982 "Clean Cuts" album.
