Harvey Mandel – The Snake is a cult 1972 album from one of the most inventive guitarists to emerge from the late-'60s American blues-rock scene. Mandel combines blues, jazz, funk and psychedelic rock with a highly distinctive electric-guitar style built around sustain, controlled feedback and fluid lead playing.
Known as “The Snake”, Mandel had already worked with Charlie Musselwhite and Canned Heat and would later play with John Mayall and The Rolling Stones. On The Snake, his guitar remains firmly at the centre of the music, moving between melodic passages, heavy blues phrasing and exploratory instrumental sections.
Tracks such as “The Divining Rod”, “Pegasus”, “Peruvian Flake” and the title track demonstrate Mandel's ability to combine strong grooves with adventurous guitar textures, while “Levitation” and “Bite The Electric Eel” push the album further toward jazz-rock and psychedelic territory.
This Record Store Day 2025 exclusive edition is pressed on translucent turquoise vinyl and presented in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork. It also includes an OBI strip and printed inner sleeve and is limited to 2,000 copies.
