Back in the Sixties Dexter Gordon (1923-1990) was living in Copenhagen and visiting the United States on an intermittent basis. He hadn't been back for several years when he visited New York in 1969 to record two sessions--one with tenor saxophone colleague James Moody--which were then intermixed to produce two LPs, Tower of Power! and More Power! Here, on Tower of Power!, the tenor battle is "Montmartre," a minor-key burner. Dexter's dramatic reading of "Those Were the Days" is another highlight. During the Seventies, Gordon returned to live in New York once more. He maintained a busy and touring schedule, and earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in the film 'Round Midnight.
