J.J. Johnson and Al Grey present a study in contrast. Johnson is the man who taught the trombone to speak the complex language of bebop. Grey kept alive in modern jazz the horn’s traditional role as shaggy dog, trickster, shouter, and plunger into comedy. They achieve an ensemble blend reminiscent of Johnson’s celebrated partnership with Kai Winding and demonstrate that each is capable of doing a bit of the other’s routine. Johnson absorbs a share of Grey’s humor. Grey shows that when it comes to trombone precision, he need bow to no one, not even to the master of precision.
