Clark Terry established his credentials as a major jazz star during the 1950s, with his work in Duke Ellington's Orchestra and on his four Riverside albums. Terry's reputation for playing his trumpet and flugelhorn with irrepressible and inclusive wit was sealed after his encounter with Thelonious Monk, In Orbit (OJC-302), and this session, an unjustly neglected gem. With the virtuosic and swinging tuba of Don Butterfield, double coverage down low from Sam Jones's bass, the contrasting fire and ice of Art Taylor and Jimmy Jones, the leader's generous solos and clever originals, and a bit of rare Ellingtonia for good measure, the album is a top-to-bottom delight.
