Wilkinson Tri-Cycle’s only album is a striking piece of late-1960s American underground rock, sitting somewhere between heavy psychedelia, electric blues and the more experimental edge of the Boston-area scene. The trio format gives the music a lean, direct sound, but the arrangements are far from simple: sudden rhythmic turns, unusual vocal lines and occasional orchestral touches give the record a restless character that keeps it from settling into standard blues-rock territory.
The album works best when the band combine their raw power with a sense of unpredictability. What Of I?, Pourscha Poe and Yellow Wall show a group willing to bend familiar rock structures into stranger shapes, while Leavin' Trunk gives the blues material a clipped, muscular attack. This Eclipse Records edition restores a fascinating one-off album from a band whose brief existence left behind a distinctive and highly individual document of American psychedelic rock.
