Wolfheart is the landmark debut studio album by Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell, originally released by Century Media in 1995. Combining black metal, gothic atmosphere, folk influences and dark romanticism, it established Moonspell as one of the most distinctive European metal bands of the 1990s.
Recorded in Germany with producer Waldemar Sorychta, the album features Fernando Ribeiro's deep, theatrical vocals alongside atmospheric keyboards, heavy guitars and elements drawn from Portuguese folklore and mythology. Its unusual combination of extreme metal and gothic music helped define the sound that Moonspell would continue to develop throughout their career.
The epic opening track Wolfshade (A Werewolf Masquerade) immediately establishes the album's dark and dramatic atmosphere, followed by the equally expansive Love Crimes. The instrumental Lua D'Inverno and folk-influenced Trebaruna introduce distinctly Portuguese elements into the band's sound.
The second side contains several of Moonspell's most enduring compositions. Vampiria became one of the band's signature songs, while the lengthy An Erotic Alchemy combines gothic sensuality with black-metal intensity. Alma Mater remains one of Moonspell's defining anthems and incorporates Portuguese lyrics into its chorus.
This De Agostini edition also includes Ataegina, originally issued as a bonus track on the digipak edition of Wolfheart. The track further explores the band's fascination with pre-Christian Iberian mythology and Portuguese cultural themes.
