Revered singer/songwriter Ivory Joe Hunter is the latest R&B legend to be afforded an entry in Ace's "King/De Luxe Acetate Series".
These stellar sides were among his first in a recording career that spanned nearly 30 years - from 1944 until his untimely death in 1974. They are widely considered by R&B collectors to be among his very best.
On most of the featured tracks, Ivory Joe is backed by the rhythm and horn section from no less a band than that of Duke Ellington. Elsewhere on the CD his accompanists include Johnny Moore's Three Blazers (with Charles Brown) and future country music production legend Owen Bradley (who also produced Brenda Lee).
For the first time ever, these tracks are presented in the kind of sound quality that puts the listener on the studio floor with the musicians.
Highlights include Ivory Joe's first ever commercial recording, the classic 'Blues At Sunrise' and his breakthrough hit, the now-standard 'Guess Who'.
The emphasis is on the upbeat throughout, making "Woo Wee!" as much of a treat for strollers and jivers as it will be for every serious R&B audiophile.
