Edinburgh-born singer-songwriter whose short but luminous early-’70s run yielded two records—Album (1970) and Stargazer (1971)—before she abruptly withdrew from the scene. After decades away, she reappeared in the 2000s and has since made occasional returns to writing and performance.
Issued in 1971 on B&C and produced by Sandy Roberton, Stargazer expands McDonald’s folk/folk-rock core with gentle acid-folk hues and refined chamber textures. With contributions from British folk-rock linchpins (including Richard Thompson and Dave Mattacks) and graceful string/choral scoring by Robert Kirby, the ten-song set—“Rod’s Song,” “Liz’s Song,” “Lonely King,” “City’s Cry,” “Dowie Dens of Yarrow,” “Baby Go Slow,” “Canadian Man,” “Good Times,” “Odyssey,” and the title track—shifts between intimate, voice-and-guitar confessions and richer, orchestrated arrangements. Long a collectors’ favorite, it has been revived by modern reissues and fresh critical attention.
