After establishing himself as one of Britain's finest rock drummers with The Nice, Brian Davison chose a different path for his next project. Rather than forming another keyboard-driven progressive outfit, he assembled Every Which Way, a band whose debut album explores a wide musical landscape that embraces jazz, folk, blues and progressive rock with equal confidence. The emphasis is very much on ensemble playing, with each musician contributing to arrangements that remain adventurous without sacrificing melody.
Originally released in 1970, the album reflects a period when British rock bands were increasingly willing to blur stylistic boundaries. Gentle acoustic passages sit alongside dynamic instrumental workouts, while the band's sophisticated songwriting gives the record a timeless quality that continues to reward listeners more than fifty years after its release. Although often overshadowed by Davison's earlier work, Every Which Way stands as a remarkable and highly individual chapter in the history of British progressive rock.
