Originally released by the French New Rose label in 1985, Clear Night for Love presents a more reflective and melodic side of Roky Erickson. Although traces of his familiar supernatural imagery remain, these five songs move freely between psychedelic country rock, blues, garage rock and direct, emotionally exposed pop songwriting.
The recordings were produced by Speedy Sparks at Music Lane Studios in Austin, Texas. Erickson is supported by Sparks on bass and guitar, Ernie Durawa on drums and guitarists John Reed and Harry Hess. The compact arrangements keep the focus on Erickson’s unmistakable voice, balancing vulnerability with the intensity that characterised his finest performances.
“You Don’t Love Me Yet” opens the record with chiming guitars and one of Erickson’s most affecting songs of romantic longing. The title track continues in a warm, semi-psychedelic country-rock direction, while “Starry Eyes” reveals his remarkable ability to write simple, memorable melodies with an almost timeless quality.
Elsewhere, “The Haunt” returns to the darker atmosphere of Erickson’s horror-themed material, combining ominous imagery with a brooding swamp-rock arrangement. “Don’t Slander Me” closes the record with a tougher blues-rock attack, distorted guitar and a particularly forceful vocal performance.
Brief but impressively varied, Clear Night for Love captures Erickson at a fascinating point in his career, combining the tenderness of his pop songwriting with the raw personality and outsider spirit that made him one of American psychedelic rock’s most distinctive figures.
