The Last In Line is the second studio album by Dio, originally released in 1984, and one of the defining heavy metal albums of the decade. Following the enormous impact of Holy Diver, Ronnie James Dio and his band returned with an album that expanded their powerful combination of soaring vocals, memorable riffs and dark fantasy imagery.
The classic line-up features Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Vivian Campbell on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass, Vinny Appice on drums and Claude Schnell on keyboards. The interplay between Campbell's muscular guitar work and Dio's unmistakable voice gives the record its characteristic mixture of melody, drama and sheer heavy-metal power.
The album opens with the anthemic We Rock before moving into the epic title track, The Last In Line, one of Dio's signature compositions. Other highlights include the furious I Speed At Night, One Night In The City, the melodic Mystery and the monumental closing track Egypt (The Chains Are On).
Produced by Ronnie James Dio, The Last In Line confirmed that the success of Holy Diver was no accident and established Dio as one of the most important heavy metal bands of the 1980s.
