1916 is the ninth studio album by legendary British rock band Motörhead, originally released in 1991. Arriving after a lengthy period of label difficulties, the album marked a powerful return and stands as one of the most varied and accomplished records of the band's later classic period.
The line-up features Lemmy Kilmister on bass and vocals, Phil Campbell and Würzel on guitars and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor on drums. It would be the final Motörhead studio album to feature Taylor throughout.
The opening The One To Sing The Blues immediately delivers the band's trademark combination of heavy metal, punk energy and rock & roll, while I'm So Bad (Baby I Don't Care) and No Voices In The Sky rank among the strongest Motörhead songs of the period. Going To Brazil is an irresistible high-speed rock & roll workout, while the sinister Nightmare/The Dreamtime reveals the album's darker side.
The second half ranges from the unusually melodic Love Me Forever to the frantic Angel City and Make My Day. The short and explosive R.A.M.O.N.E.S. is Lemmy's affectionate tribute to the Ramones and became a lasting favourite in the Motörhead catalogue.
The album closes with the remarkable title track 1916, one of the most unusual recordings Motörhead ever made. Instead of the band's familiar wall of guitars, Lemmy delivers a haunting account of young soldiers sent to their deaths during the First World War, accompanied primarily by keyboards and cello. Its restrained arrangement and deeply affecting lyrics provide a striking conclusion to the album.
