Mothership Connection is the landmark 1975 album by Parliament and one of the defining recordings of the entire P-Funk movement. Led by George Clinton, Parliament transformed funk into a spectacular mixture of deep grooves, science-fiction mythology, surreal humour and psychedelic experimentation.
The album introduced one of the central ideas of the P-Funk universe: the arrival of the Mothership and George Clinton's extraterrestrial Star Child character, bringing the liberating power of funk to Earth. The concept would soon become the centrepiece of Parliament-Funkadelic's legendary live shows, complete with an enormous spacecraft descending onto the stage.
The extraordinary cast of musicians includes George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Garry Shider, Glenn Goins and Jerome Brailey, together with horn legends Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. The result is an irresistible combination of heavy bass, elastic rhythms, keyboards, massed vocals and razor-sharp horn arrangements.
The opening P. Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up) establishes the album as an imaginary intergalactic radio broadcast before moving into the classic Mothership Connection (Star Child). Unfunky UFO and the wonderfully titled Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication continue the cosmic storyline, while Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker) became one of Parliament's biggest and most enduring anthems.
Mothership Connection was Parliament's first album to achieve platinum status and became enormously influential on subsequent funk, hip-hop, dance and electronic music. Its combination of Afro-futurist imagery, humour and exceptionally inventive musicianship established a musical universe that continues to influence artists decades later.
