Captain Marryat is one of the legendary obscurities of the early-'70s Scottish underground. Originally privately pressed in 1974 on the band's own Thor label in an edition of only around 150–200 copies and sold mainly at gigs, the album virtually disappeared on release before becoming a highly prized collector's item decades later.

Formed in Glasgow, the five-piece featured Tommy Hendry on vocals, Ian McEleny on guitar, Allan Bryce on organ, Hugh Finnegan on bass and Jimmy Rorrison on drums. Their sound sits squarely in the heavier end of British progressive rock, combining prominent Hammond organ, muscular guitar work and melodic vocals with a raw private-press atmosphere. Fans of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Beggars Opera and Rare Bird should find plenty to enjoy here.

The dramatic Blindness opens the album before the band stretches out on the eight-minute It Happened To Me, packed with organ and guitar interplay. Changes provides the record's most concise and immediately melodic moment, while the instrumental Dance Of Thor closes the album with a final burst of Hammond-driven progressive hard rock. This Guerssen edition features remastered sound and comes with an insert containing liner notes and photos plus a download card.
