Originally released internationally in the early 1970s, Soul Makossa is the landmark album that brought Cameroonian saxophonist and bandleader Manu Dibango to a worldwide audience. Fusing makossa rhythms with jazz, funk and soul, the record created an irresistibly rhythmic sound that would become hugely influential on disco, Afro-funk and later generations of dance music.

Dibango’s warm, instantly recognisable saxophone sits at the centre of the album, surrounded by driving bass lines, clipped guitar figures, keyboards, brass and densely layered percussion. The performances combine the rhythmic traditions of Cameroon with the energy of contemporary American funk and jazz, creating music that feels sophisticated without ever losing its dance-floor momentum.

“New Bell” opens the album with a deep Afro-funk groove, tightly arranged horns and an extended saxophone performance. “Nights in Zeralda” moves into a more atmospheric jazz-funk setting, while “Hibiscus” slows the pace with an expansive, melodic arrangement that highlights Dibango’s expressive playing.

The second side begins with the extended “Dangwa,” built around a hypnotic rhythm section and fluid horn lines. “Lily” provides a shorter and more melodic interlude before the title track delivers the album’s defining moment. “Soul Makossa” combines a propulsive rhythm, infectious saxophone riffs and the famous “ma-ma-ko, ma-ma-sa, mako-mako-sa” vocal refrain that became one of the most recognisable phrases in popular dance music.

The album closes with “Oboso,” another powerful meeting of African percussion, funk rhythm and jazz improvisation. Decades after its original release, Soul Makossa remains one of the defining African crossover records of the 1970s and a cornerstone of Afro-funk and global dance music.
