Kumoyo Island is the fifth and final studio album by Japanese psychedelic rock band Kikagaku Moyo, originally released in 2022 through the band's own Guruguru Brain label.
One of the most distinctive groups to emerge from the modern psychedelic scene, Kikagaku Moyo developed a highly individual sound combining psychedelic rock, acid folk, krautrock, traditional Japanese influences, Indian music and free-form improvisation. Kumoyo Island brings these elements together in a colourful and remarkably varied final studio statement.
The album was developed after the five musicians reconvened at Tsubame Studios in Asakusabashi, Tokyo, the same studio associated with some of their earliest recordings. With touring suspended during the pandemic, the group had the opportunity to develop accumulated demos and musical fragments into a complete album.
Monaka draws inspiration from traditional Japanese minyo folk melodies, while Dancing Blue combines hypnotic rhythm and psychedelic funk. Meu Mar is an imaginative interpretation of a song by Brazilian artist Erasmo Carlos, while the heavier Cardboard Pile moves through distorted grooves, psychedelic guitars and unexpected rhythmic shifts. The expansive Yayoi, Iyayoi is particularly notable for featuring the band singing in Japanese.
Dreamlike, experimental and highly melodic, Kumoyo Island provides a fitting conclusion to Kikagaku Moyo's decade-long journey, moving effortlessly between gentle psychedelic folk, heavy fuzz rock, krautrock-inspired grooves and surreal instrumental passages.
