Live were a German progressive rock group formed in Gevelsberg in 1971. Despite their confusingly simple name and a strong reputation as a concert band, they released only one single during their original lifetime. A complete album was recorded in 1974 but remained unpublished for more than two decades.
The group created melodic, English-language progressive rock built around Norbert Aufmhof’s organ, electric piano and flute. Rather than relying on constant complexity, the musicians developed spacious arrangements, memorable vocal passages and extended instrumental sections supported by guitar, bass and drums.
“Peer Gynt” opens the album with an imaginative progressive-rock interpretation inspired by Edvard Grieg’s famous music. Organ, flute and guitar gradually transform the familiar theme into an extended original arrangement. “Carol” and “Fly Like A Bird” reveal the band’s more melodic side, combining expressive vocals with warm keyboard textures and carefully controlled instrumental development.
“It Was Nice” and “Dreaming” introduce a more reflective atmosphere, while “Land Of The Blind” and “Unknown Soldier” move towards heavier and more dramatic territory. Throughout the album, the flute provides an important contrast to the prominent organ and electric guitar, giving the music a character that recalls early British progressive rock without sounding derivative.
The recordings were finally released as a privately pressed LP in 1995, limited to only 500 copies. This Garden of Delights CD presents the complete album together with the fourteen-minute bonus track “Jazz.” Recorded live in Recklinghausen in 1971, it is not conventional jazz but an extended instrumental progressive-rock performance with lightly jazz-influenced improvisation.
