Doko E – Live in Cologne 1973 presents an extended performance by Can’s celebrated early-1970s line-up: vocalist Damo Suzuki, bassist Holger Czukay, guitarist Michael Karoli, keyboardist Irmin Schmidt and drummer Jaki Liebezeit. A brief edited section of “Doko E” appeared on Can’s archival collection Limited Edition and was subsequently included on Unlimited Edition. This release restores the much longer performance, revealing the full development of the piece rather than the compact excerpt familiar from those albums.
The first side gradually establishes a hypnotic foundation through Liebezeit’s precise, cyclical drumming and Czukay’s economical bass patterns. Karoli’s guitar moves between clipped rhythmic figures, sharp psychedelic accents and freer passages, while Schmidt adds organ and electronic textures around Damo Suzuki’s spontaneous Japanese-language vocals.
As the performance continues, the musicians reshape the central groove through subtle changes in rhythm, density and intensity. Individual instruments move briefly into the foreground before returning to the collective pulse, demonstrating Can’s remarkable ability to create constantly evolving music without relying on conventional song structures.
Raw, immersive and rhythmically powerful, the complete “Doko E” offers a fascinating view of Can’s studio improvisation process during one of the band’s most creative periods.
