Scillonian Solace is an unusual album of experimental progressive soundscapes created by Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter McKerrow. The recording brings together two extended works concerned with remote islands, memory, water and the emotional effect of isolated landscapes.

The project developed from an electronic composition McKerrow began in 1975 after visiting the remote island group of St Kilda at the age of sixteen. He continued to revisit and refine the material over the following decades, eventually shaping it into the completed work presented here as “Across the Water II.”

The companion composition, “Scillonian Solace,” was inspired by underwater experiences around the Isles of Scilly. Piano, synthesizer, acoustic guitar and mandolin are combined with spacious production and carefully layered electronic textures, creating music that moves gradually rather than following a conventional song structure.

“Scillonian Solace” occupies the first side, developing through meditative keyboard passages, drifting acoustic sounds and darker maritime atmospheres. The music evokes submerged objects, changing currents, distant shores and the mysterious stillness found beneath the surface of the sea.

“Across the Water II” fills the second side. Its slowly unfolding themes reflect the isolation and history of St Kilda, using repetition, sustained synthesizer tones and sparse instrumental details to create a feeling of distance, loss and remembrance.

Peter McKerrow performs piano, synthesizer, mandolin, acoustic guitar and vocals, constructing an intimate sound world positioned between progressive electronic music, ambient composition and experimental folk. The result is best approached as a continuous journey rather than a collection of individual songs.

Released by Seelie Court in a limited edition of 550 copies, Scillonian Solace is a distinctive archival project for adventurous listeners and collectors of experimental progressive, electronic and atmospheric music.
