Thanks to their two excellent 1967 albums for Columbia, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy boast a solid cult following amongst aficionados of West Coast 60s psych. The bands’ strong vocals, songwriting abilities and overall quality and distinctive sound - ranging from folk-rock jangle to garagey rave-ups and blissed-out psychedelic pop - make them a breed apart from similar acts of the era. And now Spreading From The Ashes further showcases the remarkable talents of this under-appreciated outfit.The compilation traces the development of this Los Angeles group from their folk rock roots as the Ashes in 1965, through to a remarkably prolific peak in 1967. Spreading From The Ashes consist largely of unissued songs cut for their publishing company and other demos, all of which are of a remarkable standard and commensurate with the classic style of the bands records.We also feature rare tracks cut for the bands first label, Vault, that were originally released as singles and album cuts, but have never been reissued before. These include tunes from their first incarnation as the Ashes, when the band’s drummer was Spencer Dryden, later with Jefferson Airplane, and provide a fascinating glimpse at the folk rock roots of the band.Spreading From The Ashes is compiled with the full co-operation of the band and features an in-depth history of this enigmatic outfit as well as being fully illustrated with rare pix and memorabilia.
