Aragorn was a progressive rock band from Australia, formed in 1972 by keyboardist Oleg Ditrich and fellow music students. Although they never toured or released an album during their initial run, the group recorded a long-form suite in September 1973 at Clover Studios in Sydney, drawing direct inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Running approximately 45 minutes, the composition is a single, continuous piece split into 16 distinct sections, including titles like “Creatures of the Night,” “Rivendell,” and “Land of Mordor.”
Musically, the suite blends symphonic progressive rock, folk-jazz nuances, and spacey instrumental textures, featuring intricate guitar solos, flute passages, and classically influenced keyboards. The sound evokes comparisons to early Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, and Van der Graaf Generator.
