One of the earliest and finest exponents of world jazz, Oregon began in 1970 formed around guitarist Ralph Towner. They produced a string of albums for Vanguard in the 1970s. Violin is considered by many to be the apex of their work. From the beginning, the band eschewed most jazz conventions. Improvisation was central to the band's work, and in this sense their music is most firmly in the jazz tradition and this album is inspired heavily by John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. As always the music is characterized by an openness to diverse musical influences.
