Despite her incredibly unconventional style, when the first Yma Sumac album "Voice Of The Xtabay" was originally released in 1950 it hit number one on the US charts making the Peruvian singer an enormous success and simultaneously launching the 'Exotica' vogue. She was an innovator in the truest sense of the word and few, if any, have been able to follow in her giant footsteps.
