Originally released by Capitol Records in 1969, Of the People / By the People / For the People from the Common People was the sole album by the mysterious American group The Common People. Little information about the musicians circulated at the time, and the record gradually became one of the more intriguing obscurities of late-1960s US psychedelic rock.
Produced by radio personality and music promoter “Lord” Tim Hudson, the album combines concise garage-rock songs with the darker colours of orchestrated psychedelia. David Axelrod’s arrangements introduce strings, brass, keyboards and carefully placed studio effects, expanding the group’s direct rock foundation without losing its raw and slightly haunted character.
“Soon There’ll Be Thunder” opens the record with an immediate mixture of melody and tension, while “I Have Been Alone” develops its atmosphere through melancholy vocals and dramatic orchestration. Elsewhere, “Those Who Love,” “They Didn’t Even Go to the Funeral” and “Land of a Day” move between garage rock, baroque pop and reflective psychedelic balladry. The varied arrangements give the album a distinctive identity that stands apart from many more conventional underground releases of its period.
Long overlooked after its original appearance, The Common People’s only LP has since attracted collectors of American garage, psychedelic and orchestrated pop. This vinyl reissue restores the original eleven-song album and offers a welcome opportunity to rediscover one of Capitol’s more elusive late-1960s recordings.
