A quintessential example of the “tune in, turn on, drop out” spirit, this legendary session from 1974 captures a rare, drug-fueled reunion between John Lennon and Paul McCartney following the Beatles’ breakup. At the time, Lennon was producing Harry Nilsson’s album Pussy Cats when Paul and Linda McCartney dropped by Burbank Studios on March 28 after the first night of recording. They were soon joined by Nilsson, Stevie Wonder, Jesse Ed Davis, May Pang, Mal Evans, Bobby Keys, and producer Ed Freeman for an impromptu jam session. The result is a gloriously chaotic, spaced-out document of rock history—something you truly have to hear to believe.
