Originally released in 1976, Agents Of Fortune brought Blue Öyster Cult’s intelligent and often mysterious hard rock to a much wider audience. The album retains the group’s powerful guitars and dark lyrical imagery while introducing more melodic songwriting, richer vocal arrangements and a polished studio sound.
Its best-known track, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” was written and sung by guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser. Built around an instantly recognisable guitar figure, layered harmonies and a lengthy atmospheric instrumental passage, it became the band’s defining recording and one of the enduring rock songs of the 1970s.
The remainder of the album demonstrates the group’s unusual musical range. “This Ain’t The Summer Of Love” opens with compact, aggressive hard rock, while “E.T.I. (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)” combines science-fiction imagery with a heavy, hypnotic riff. “Morning Final” creates a cinematic urban atmosphere, and “Tattoo Vampire” is a fast, concise burst of guitar-driven energy.
Patti Smith contributes vocals to “The Revenge Of Vera Gemini,” adding a dramatic contrast to Albert Bouchard’s lead performance. With different members contributing compositions and lead vocals, Agents Of Fortune presents Blue Öyster Cult as a genuine ensemble rather than a band centred around a single frontman. This Music On Vinyl edition presents the complete original album on heavyweight vinyl in a gatefold sleeve.
