Among the Living is the third studio album by Anthrax and one of the defining recordings of the 1980s American thrash-metal movement. Originally released in 1987, it brought together rapid, tightly controlled riffing, powerful melodic vocals, hardcore-punk energy and the memorable group choruses that became an essential part of the band's sound.
The classic line-up features Joey Belladonna on vocals, Scott Ian on rhythm guitar, Dan Spitz on lead guitar, Frank Bello on bass and Charlie Benante on drums. Their contrasting musical strengths give the record its distinctive personality: Ian's sharply articulated riffs and Benante's relentless drumming provide the foundation, while Spitz's leads, Bello's prominent bass and Belladonna's clear, high-register vocals keep the songs both aggressive and immediately recognisable.
The title track opens the album with a long, ominous introduction before breaking into a fast and forceful thrash attack. “Caught in a Mosh” became one of Anthrax's best-known live songs, while “I Am the Law,” inspired by the comic-book character Judge Dredd, combines a heavy central riff with an anthemic chorus. “Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)” adds the band's characteristic dark humour without reducing the intensity of the music.
The second side includes “A Skeleton in the Closet,” whose lyrics draw upon Stephen King's novella Apt Pupil, and “Indians,” a powerful examination of the historical treatment of Native Americans. “One World” addresses the threat of nuclear destruction, while the extended “A.D.I. / Horror of It All” shifts between acoustic passages and a fierce electric performance before “Imitation of Life” brings the album to a hard-driving conclusion.
Produced by Anthrax with Eddie Kramer, Among the Living combines the precision of heavy metal with the speed and directness of New York hardcore. The album helped establish Anthrax internationally and remains a central recording from the band's Joey Belladonna-era catalogue.
