Quintessence was one of the most adventurous and exciting bands of the hippie era. Ascontemporaries of The Doors and Pink Floyd, they gained a fanatical following for theirblend of rock, jazz and Eastern spiritual music. Hailed by critics as forerunners of suchbands as Ozric Tentacles, Quintessence was the ultimate New Age experience. They werefronted by charismatic singer Shiva Shakti (now known by his real name Phil Jones). 'DiveDeep' (1971) was their third album and is full of ecstatic performances, whose hypnoticsounds entranced a generation.
