The sole album by The 4 Levels Of Existence is one of the most distinctive recordings to emerge from the Greek underground rock scene of the 1970s. Originally issued privately by the Venus label in 1976, it combines hard psychedelic rock, progressive structures and Greek-language songwriting with a raw, uncompromising production.
The album is dominated by distorted electric guitar, extended solos, forceful bass and drums, and urgent vocals. Rather than imitating the better-known British and American groups of the period, the musicians developed a recognisably Greek form of heavy psychedelia, balancing aggressive passages with melancholy melodies and occasional acoustic or violin-led sections.
Tracks such as “Metamorphic,” “When The Snow Melts” and “The Fool’s Trumpet” demonstrate the band’s powerful guitar sound, while “Child’s Song” and “Untitled” reveal a more reflective side. The closing “Someday In Athens” later gained wider recognition when part of the recording was sampled in Jay-Z’s “Run This Town.” This carefully documented Lion Productions edition presents the complete album from the master tapes and includes an extensive illustrated booklet.
