Formed at Keele University in 1974, Omson Greme occupied a fascinating and highly individual corner of the British progressive underground. Their music brings together Canterbury-style eccentricity, pastoral folk, psychedelic rock and touches of Krautrock, with whimsical vocals, adventurous arrangements, saxophone and angular guitar work.
No Smoke Emerging gathers the band's surviving radio and studio recordings from 1975–1976, capturing them at their most imaginative and musically assured. The songs move freely between reflective acoustic passages, unusual lyrical narratives, concise bursts of humour and extended progressive excursions. Comparisons can be drawn with Audience, early Soft Machine and Nine Days Wonder, although Omson Greme retained a strange and unmistakable identity of their own.
These recordings never received a proper commercial release during the band's lifetime. Omson Greme eventually abandoned progressive rock and evolved into the punk group The Exits, making this carefully assembled archival LP an important document of their earlier and more experimental period.
