This strictly limited split single brings together two previously unreleased examples of late-1960s and early-1970s British psychedelia.
Mandrake Paddle Steamer’s “Pandemonium Shadow Show”, also known as “Cooger & Dark,” was recorded in 1968 but remained unissued at the time. The track combines danceable rhythms, prominent Hammond organ, fuzz guitar, powerful vocals and adventurous progressive touches.
Mandrake Paddle Steamer formed in Walthamstow, London, in 1967 around a group of art-school students. Unlike many contemporary beat groups that gradually adopted psychedelic influences, the band pursued an experimental and progressive direction from its earliest performances.
During their brief existence, they shared bills with Pink Floyd, The Nice and Vanilla Fudge, appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival and held a residency at Hamburg’s Star-Club. Their only contemporary single, “Strange Walking Man,” was recorded at Abbey Road and released by Parlophone in 1969, but their other studio recordings remained hidden for decades.
On the reverse, Birmingham cult group Fairfield Ski contribute the previously unreleased early-1970s recording “No Good Child.” Driven by swirling Hammond organ, catchy vocals and heavy drums, the song occupies the fertile territory between psychedelic pop, progressive rock and hard-edged underground rock.
Limited to only 314 individually numbered copies, this Guerssen anniversary release presents two outstanding discoveries from the British psychedelic archives.
