Label: Southern Lord
Formed by bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Hakius following the demise of the legendary doom metal band Sleep, OM quickly established themselves as one of the most distinctive acts in modern heavy music. Their minimalist approach, built around hypnotic bass lines, meditative rhythms and chant-like vocals, blends doom metal with drone, psychedelia and spiritual music to create a sound unlike any other.
Released in 2007 as the band's third studio album and their debut for Southern Lord, Pilgrimage marked another major step in OM's artistic evolution. Recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, produced by the band, and mastered by Bob Weston, the album expands upon the meditative atmosphere of its predecessors with richer dynamics and more refined songwriting. The lyrics explore spiritual awakening, consciousness, astral existence and the nature of the soul, while the music unfolds through slowly evolving riffs, cyclical rhythms and trance-like repetition. Widely regarded as one of OM's defining works, Pilgrimage remains a landmark recording in experimental doom and psychedelic rock.
