Originally released by Ariola only in Holland, Roadmaster was comprised of various previously unreleased recordings made for A&M between 1970 and 1972. Eight of these tracks come from a April 1972 session featuring usual L.A. suspects Clarence White, Byron Berline, Michael Clarke and Sneaky Pete, along with Memphis soul legend Spooner Oldham. Another two cuts come from a scrapped single played by the five founding members of The Byrds, recorded just prior to their 1973 reunion album. Though it is, in some ways, an odds and ends compilation, Roadmaster holds up to Gene Clark's other albums of the time period (White Light and No Other), all three of which are masterpieces of American folk and country-rock by a man who might stand behind only Bob Dylan himself in terms of pure songwriting skill.
