Originally released by CBS in 1980, Roky Erickson and the Aliens marked the former 13th Floor Elevators singer’s full emergence as a solo artist. Rather than revisiting his earlier group’s swirling psychedelic sound, Erickson developed a tougher and more direct form of rock built around distorted guitars, forceful rhythms and imagery drawn from vintage horror and science-fiction films.
Produced by former Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook, the album captures The Aliens in sharp and aggressive form. Erickson’s extraordinary voice rises above the band’s hard-rock attack, moving effortlessly from melodic phrasing to urgent, almost unrestrained cries. The concise arrangements give his unusual songs an immediate impact while preserving the wild energy that had defined his earlier work.
“Two-Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer),” “I Think of Demons” and “Don’t Shake Me Lucifer” combine garage-rock drive with memorable hooks, while “Night of the Vampire” and “Creature with the Atom Brain” transform B-movie imagery into compelling personal mythology. Even the deliberately minimal “I Walked with a Zombie” becomes hypnotic through repetition, atmosphere and Erickson’s completely committed performance.
This coloured-vinyl edition restores the original ten-track 1980 album and expands it with “Bloody Hammer” and “The Wind and More.” Pressed on striking cyan, hot-pink and neon-green splatter vinyl, it presents one of the defining recordings of Erickson’s post-Elevators career in a distinctive collector’s edition.
