Uncle Jim is the debut album by the Los Angeles-based country-rock group Uncle Jim's Music. Originally released by Kapp Records in 1971, it combines acoustic and electric guitars, pedal-steel colouring, fiddle, keyboards and close vocal harmonies in a warm, roots-oriented West Coast production.
The group developed from The Whitehorse Brothers, a bluegrass and folk trio formed by Texas musicians Gary Nicholson and Wes Pritchett. Encouraged by Gram Parsons, they relocated to California and became part of the emerging Los Angeles country-rock community before expanding the line-up and adopting the Uncle Jim's Music name.
Gary Nicholson contributes guitar, vocals and several of the album's strongest songs. He later became a highly successful Nashville songwriter and producer, but these early recordings already demonstrate his ability to combine country storytelling with memorable rock and folk melodies.
“Old Time Feeling” opens the album with relaxed acoustic instrumentation and rich vocal harmonies. “You and Country Days” develops at a more leisurely pace, while the instrumental “Dallas County Breakdown” highlights the group's bluegrass roots and agile ensemble playing.
“There Was a Time” and “Just Came Back to Say Goodbye Again” bring a more reflective quality to the first half. The second half ranges from the concise country rock of “Comin' Home to You” to the atmospheric “She Came Out of the Southwest” and the road-worn narrative of “Ninety Miles.”
“Hometown Girl” and “Kickin' Thru the Ashes” combine melodic songwriting with a slightly tougher rural-rock sound. The closing “The Planner” provides an introspective conclusion, supported by restrained instrumentation and carefully arranged harmonies.
Produced by John Boylan, whose work was closely connected with the developing Southern California country-rock scene, the album has a natural and uncluttered sound. Guest violinist Michael Mindel adds further traditional texture to the band's mixture of folk, bluegrass and early-seventies rock.
Although Uncle Jim's Music recorded only two albums before separating, their debut has gradually become recognised as an appealing example of early American country rock. This Big Pink Music edition presents the complete original eleven-track album on CD in a miniature LP-style papersleeve.
