Electric Sandwich were a German underground rock band from the Bonn area, formed at the end of the 1960s and remembered today for one remarkable self-titled album. Originally released in the early 1970s on Brain, the record has become a sought-after item among collectors of Krautrock, heavy psych, jazz-rock and progressive rock.
The band’s sound is difficult to reduce to one label. Heavy guitar passages, blues-rooted riffs, saxophone outbursts, organ and Mellotron colours, loose rhythmic drive and psychedelic improvisation all meet inside the same restless framework. The music has the raw electricity of hard rock, but also the freedom and unpredictability associated with the German underground scene of the period.
The opening track, China, immediately shows the group’s strength: a long, driving piece where guitar, bass, drums and saxophone push forward with hypnotic energy. Devil’s Dream and Nervous Creek continue the album’s darker, more exploratory side, mixing bluesy tension with a rough psych-rock edge.
Side B keeps the same wide-ranging character. It’s No Use To Run and I Want You bring more direct rock momentum, while Archie’s Blues leans into the band’s blues foundation without becoming conventional. The closing Material Darkness returns to a heavier, more atmospheric mood, ending the album with the same underground intensity that runs through the whole record.
This Garden Of Delights edition, catalogue number CD 204, presents Electric Sandwich on CD with booklet, making this important German heavy psych / Krautrock album available again for collectors and new listeners.
